Everyone loves the feeling of being picked—whether it’s for a sports team, a job, or a relationship. It makes us feel seen and valued.

But the Gospel tells us we don't have to perform to be chosen. To be "chosen by design" means you were intentionally known, loved, and selected by Jesus Christ before the creation of the world. Your worth isn't something you have to earn; it was fully secured by Jesus on the cross.

1. Finding Rest in Jesus

We live in a world obsessed with achievements. We constantly strive to build our resumes, curate our lives, and prove that we matter. This leaves us exhausted, trapped in a cycle of trying to "fit in" and fearing that if we fail, we will be rejected.

The Bible directly counters this performance trap. In Ephesians 1:4-5, we are reminded of just how long God has loved us:

4Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. 5God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.

Ephesians 1:4-5

We don’t have to perform to earn love when that love and acceptance has already been freely given.

Author and researcher Brené Brown highlights the emotional exhaustion of trying to earn our place:

"True belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world; our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance."

Brown, Brené. The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are. Hazelden Publishing, 2010.

We can present our true selves to Jesus, and He offers the ultimate cure for the weariness of looking for acceptance.

Jesus doesn't ask you to fake it or hide your flaws to be accepted. He already knows the depth of your imperfections—and He chose you anyway. When you rest in Jesus, you realize your acceptance is based on His perfection, not yours. You are completely free to be authentic because you are completely loved.

2. Chosen by Jesus to Serve the World

Sometimes people mistake being chosen by God as a badge of exclusive privilege—as if it means "we are the favorites and others are left out". But God's choice is never about exclusion; it is about assignment.

In John 15:16, Jesus shifts our focus from being passive favorites to active servants:

"You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last."

Jesus wants you to grow and mature, and just like a plant that produces fruit when it’s alive and flourishing, so will your life. Jesus chose you to be His hands and feet—to bring His light, kindness, and healing into a broken world. He didn't design you by accident. Your unique personality, your life story, and even the pieces Jesus has redeemed from your past hurts are the exact tools He wants to use to love the people around you.

3. How Living in Jesus Changes Everything

When the central through of your life shifts from “what do I have to do be chosen” to “Jesus chooses me” two things happen:

  • You handle rejection differently: When people, relationships, or jobs reject you, it still stings. But it can no longer destroy your identity. Human rejection cannot overrule the fact that Jesus, who gave His life to call you His own, chooses you every day.

  • You see others through His eyes: You stop viewing other people as competitors for attention or validation. Instead, you see them as people created by Jesus, deeply loved by Him, and filled with their own God-given purpose.

The Bottom Line

You don’t need to spend your life exhausting yourself to prove you belong. From before your life began through yesterday and tomorrow, Jesus has already chosen you, called you by name, and given you a purpose. Step out of the pressure to perform, trust in His grace, and live out the unique story He designed you to tell.
